National Bank of Malawi will sponsor college basketball tournament to the tune of K30 million.

The Bank unveiled the sponsorship on Friday, at the head office in Blantyre witnessed by the Basketball Association of Malawi (BASMAL) officials and the National Council of Sports Executive Secretary, George Jana.

Head of Marketing and Corporate Affairs, Wilkins Mijiga said that they have ventured into basketball to keep college students busy. He noted that some college students engange in immoral behavior because they do not have support for their sporting activities. Mijiga said that the basketball sponsorship has been on cards for a while but the bank wanted to be sure if there will be transparency and accountability in the management of funds.

'We could have announced this sponsorship  two years ago but we wanted to be sure that there will be transparency and accountability. These are very important when managing a sponsorship.'' he said

Basmal General Secretary, Edgar Ng'ong'ola assured NBM that the sponsorship will be put to good use.

The Tournament will be played in BASMAL's northen, southern easten and central zones. The zonal champions will qualify for the regional level where best teams will make it to the national finals.
