National Bank of Malawi (NBM) plc has supported the Mzuzu University Vice Chancellor’s fund-raising walk for needy students with K1.5 million.

Speaking in Mzuzu during the cheque presentation, NBM plc Mzuzu Service Centre Manager Samson Mzungu said although some members of the bank participated in the fund-raising walk as part of the bank’s wellness progamme, they also support the initiative by the Vice Chancellor to keep the needy students in college.

“As the Bank of the Nation, NBM plc believes that education is the key to the development of the country and that is why we have supported the education sector especially at tertiary level for more than 40 years through sponsorships, school fees and best students’ awards among others.”

“Today we have decided to make our contribution of K1.5 million for the needy students because they do not need to be left out if we are to achieve the Malawi 2063 agenda of achieving human capital development through education,” said Mzungu.

Mzuni Vice Chancellor Professor John Kalenga Saka hailed NBM plc for the support towards the support of the 125 needy students who on the verge of withdrawing from college because of lack of fees.

“We thank NBM plc for this genuine partnership and for granting us the money which we promise that will be put to good use by indeed selecting the needy students who will add value to this donation,” said Saka.

Mzuni announced that it needs K50 million to support needy students who are failing to pay the K400,000 fees per semester and that already 68 students have already withdrawn and reserved their places for next academic year due to failure to pay fees.

Saka, lecturers, students and other well-wishers recently organized the fund-raising 10 kilometre walk in Mzuzu to raise funds for the needy students.
