FUM Commends National Bank of Malawi for Financial Inclusion Efforts

Farmers Union of Malawi (FUM) has applauded National Bank of Malawi for engaging farmers in the central region for enhanced financial inclusion across the country.

The FUM Agribusiness coordinator, Roudolf Binga made the remarks during a meeting with farmers hosted by National Bank of Malawi in Lilongwe at City Centre Branch on Thursday, April 7th, 2022.

“The interaction between the farmers and NBM plc is very crucial as farmers have been having facing challenges in accessing financial services. With this meeting, the bank has cleared all the misconceptions that the farmers initially had that bank is only for the elite,” Said Binga.

Speaking during the meeting, one of the farmers in attendance, Tamiton Zaunda, expressed his satisfaction with the bank’s effort to bring farmers closer to them and teach them on the bank’s operations and services offered that are available for the farmers.

“I am satisfied with the interaction that us farmers had with the bank. We now understand the services offered by National Bank of Malawi after hearing it directly from them. I believe with this kind of interaction and understanding from us farmers, Malawi being an agro-based country stands a better chance of developing using the services the bank is offered,” said Zaunda.

George Nyirenda, NBM Plc Capital City Service Centre Manager, said National Bank of Malawi will continue bringing all citizens closer for enhanced financial inclusion to ensure that no one is left behind in accessing financial services in the country.

“People in the rural areas have several misconceptions regarding the operations of financial institution, however National Bank of Malawi is committed to bring every citizen closer regardless of their location and make the services we offer accessible to them all. We want to empower these stakeholders with enough and accurate information which will help them make informed financial decisions,” Said Nyirenda.

National Bank of Malawi invited 30 farmers from across the central region through the Farmers Union of Malawi to visit the bank and engage with various departments. This was organised to create a platform for conversation with this group of stakeholders of the bank for enhanced understanding the role of the bank in the economy and the services offered by the bank.

Over the past weeks, National bank of Malawi has been engaging various stakeholders across the country for enhanced understanding on the role of the bank in the economy. On March 18, 2022, NBM Plc invited 15 members of the Vendors Association of Malawi and 5 members of the Minibus Association of Malawi to visit the bank to interact with the staff and learn more about the bank.

NBM plc, through its Digital & Financial Services Department, also invited the media together with the ICT Association of Malawi (ICTAM) to a dinner to discuss financial and digital inclusion at Ryalls Hotel in Blantyre.


On 7th of April, 2022, National Bank of Malawi through its Credit Department in the central region met selected media columnists and business journalists at Latitude Hotel to discuss the role of the bank on cchannelizing Funds to productive operations, Investment and Fuller Utilization of Resources, Capital Formation & Creation of Credit, business advisory and Monetizing Debt and the bank’s inclusiveness and customer coverage.
